NORMAL SALINE

• Normal saline includes sodium and chloride
• Sodium is an electrolyte that regulates the amount of water in the body which is a key element lost with excess alcohol consumption.
• NOTE:  Alcohol is an ADH (Anti-diuretic hormone) inhibitor.  ADH is a hormone created in the hypothalamus that tells the kidneys how much water to conserve and controls overall blood volume.  When we drink alcohol, this hormone is inhibited and our kidneys no longer regulate urine excretion. Thus, we begin urinating excessively, which leads to dehydration. This compounded with occasional vomiting from excess alcohol intake is a recipe for severe dehydration.  This leads to fatigue, headaches, nausea and body aches; all the dreaded symptoms of a hangover.
• Fluid replacement is the MOST essential treatment in controlling the hangover symptoms,

• B vitamin and mineral replacement is crucial in patients with hangovers since many of these vitamins are excreted via the kidneys and are lost due to ADH inhibition as noted above.

• Toradol is the most effective and fast acting non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication that is used to help control the body aches and headache often felt with a hangover. (does not have to be included)

• Zofran is a medication that treats nausea by blocking the chemical signals triggering the vomiting center in our central brain.  It has been widely studied and used for nausea and vomiting with great results. (does not have to be included)
